ADAPTIVE LEARNING
Adaptive learning designs can mean many different things. but basically, it's creating a design that customizes a learning experience for each learner. Recent upgrades to course building software has allowed for the creation of variables and java script to easily provide an individual learning experience for each learner. I have leveraged this to design compliance courseware that allows the learner to "test out" - thus validating existing knowledge. This is a huge time saver for the employee and a cost saver for the organization. How can this be a cost saver? Imagine you have a group of 5 compliance courses. If these each take 15 minutes to complete, then any course tested out would save the employee 15 minutes. For the project demo at left, on average, learners were able to test out of 2 courses. This saved the learner 30 minutes, and the organization .5 non-production hours per employee. You can see how this could add up to huge savings. Learners are able to first take assessment modules and skip content based on this performance.
Other techniques I have used include customizing navigation to lock/unlock modules in a course and even highlight question content areas to support course review and assessment retries. I have also applied adaptive design to question banks and assessments.
The course at left combines 5 annual mandatory safety compliance courses into 1 and includes a pre-test for each module to allow the learner to test-out. It was built over 10 years ago, but is still being used today. Any failed modules requires the learner to review the content and complete an engaging knowledge check. I've removed most of the content but have left in what engaging knowledge checks I was able to include. You can try to click around and get a feel for what an adaptive learning design looks like.
